I. Cutting OF the section. - Bulky samples, such as pieces of rails, pigs of cast iron, etc., should be sent to the lab oratory in small fragments.

The attempt should not be made to machine in the laboratory samples weighing more than one kil ogram, otherwise the loss of time will be considerable.

The dimensions of the final sample to be subjected to examination should be in the neighborhood of ten millimeters.

The cutting of these small samples may be accomplished very satisfactorily by means of a hack saw, in the case of all metals whose hardness does not exceed that of unhardened steel.
