The Substance: Albert Hoffman's LSD, DVD

The Substance: Albert Hoffman's LSD DVD

Directed by Martin Witz

Documentary charting the history of the drug known as LSD and its subsequent influence on the world at large.

First synthesised by chemist Albert Hofmann in a Swiss pharmaceutical laboratory in 1943, lysergic acid diethylamide gained worldwide exposure in the 1960s when it was famously adopted by the counterculture movement as a drug of choice.

Using archive footage and interviews the film traces LSD's rise to prominence, as well as shedding some light on less well known episodes when its mind-altering properties were investigated by the American military for use as a potential weapon during the Cold War.
