Description
Der Kaufmann von Venedig (engl. The Comical History of the Merchant of Venice, or Otherwise Called the Jew of Venice) ist eine Komodie William Shakespeares.
Sie entstand zwischen 1596 und 1598 und wurde 1600 in der ersten Quartoausgabe veroffentlicht.
Die erste bekannte Auffuhrung fand am 10. Februar 1605 vor Konig Jakob I. statt. Das Stück spielt nur zum Teil in Venedig; wichtige Szenen spielen in Belmont, einem Landsitz auf dem Festland.
Die Handlung beruht auf "Il Pecorone" von Giovanni Fiorentino und der 195.
