Alan became Sir Alex Ferguson's first acquisition when he signed for the Red Devils as a schoolboy in January 1987.

He turned professional with his boyhood club but suffered the heartbreak of being released when he was 19. A move to Exeter City provided the opportunity to play first-team football under World Cup-winner Alan Ball before a serious back injury ended Tonge’s football career at the age of just 22.

After feeling completely lost and enduring mental-health battles, Tonge rebuilt his life by reinvesting in his education.
