Description

Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers were a major creative force in modern jazz. They were legendary as representing the archetypal hard bop school of jazz, with a driving blues-flavoured approach. These performances capture the Messengers when Blakey and pianist Horace Silver first formed the group with tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, trumpeter Kenny Dorham and bassist Doug Watkins. This set comprises the performances which were subsequently released on the Blue Note label and showcases the full range of the group's skill and style.
