In an unpretentious house which stood on a corner of two of the smaller streets in the town lived a young girl named Arla.
For a year or more Arla had been in the habit of waking up very early in the morning, sometimes long before daylight, and it had become a habit with her to lie and listen to the clocks.
Her room was at the top of the house, and one of its windows opened to the west and another to the south, so that sounds entered from different quarters.
Arla liked to leave these windows open so that the sounds of the clocks might come in.
