Petersburg university who hates revolution. His classmate Holding assassinates a government official and then goes to his house to hide, but he is afraid of being implicated and informs on Holding, resulting in the latter being executed by the government.

But Razumov did not return to the study life he had hoped for because of his informant.

Instead, he was coerced by government intelligence and sent to Geneva, Switzerland, to spy on exiled Russian revolutionaries.

In Geneva,Razumov ran into Holdin's mother and sister.

When Holding's sister confides in him, Razumov is tortured by his conscience to tell the truth, and is eventually retaliated by the revolutionaries, beaten to deafness, and ends up spending the rest of his life in a remote village in Russia with a maid
