Description

This innovative programme describes Sensory Integration theory, and provides behaviour strategies and storybooks to help primary-aged children, or older children with learning difficulties to stay alert and attend in the classroom or similar situations.

The Programme: includes five storybooks with car characters each of which focus on a different sensory need: Having something in your mouth, Move, Touch, Listen, and Look; helps adults and children to recognise the difficulties that may arise, and offers a language and structure to enable children to alter their levels of alertness and to take responsibility for their own behaviour; enables other children, who are not necessarily having difficulties, to understand and help those who are different, rather than dismissing or bullying them; is designed to fit in with the Literacy Hour, offers a Circle Time structure and worksheets starting at P-Levels to National Curriculum Levels 1 and 2; and enables behavioural problems to be addressed within the school curriculum. It includes a Teacher's Manual with photocopiable worksheets, as well as a Training Package to use with others who are involved with the child's progress, for example, teaching assistants, parents and carers.

Based on 'How Does Your Engine Run?' by Mary Sue Williams and Sherry Shellenberger, this comprehensive programme is a valuable and effective tool.

It will help children in special schools or those who, through the policy of inclusion, are in mainstream education and who present Sensory Integration needs, attention or behavioural difficulties which impair the child's and their peers' ability to attend and learn.
