The oyster industry, which dominated the town's economy in the early part of this century, has declined, but the indomitable spirit of the people has survived this and more: floods, freezing, wartime bombing and the vagaries of the sea, to name but some.

Entertainments, celebrations, regattas, seaside fun and amusements and holidaymakers also have their place alongside the everyday activities of ordinary people at home, at school, in the street, on the seafront and at work.

Mick Glover is a native of Whitstable whose family have lived there for generations.
