In the aftermath of the First World War, Sarah Burton (Maxwell Martin) returns to Yorkshire from London.
Having lost her fiance to war, Sarah, now in her thirties, takes up the position of headmistress at the local girls' school.
A modern, forward-thinking career woman full of drive and ambition, Sarah later finds herself torn between work and romance as she reluctantly falls in love with Conservative landowner Robert Carne (Morrissey).
