Description

For nine years, Carwyn Jones was at the cutting edge of Welsh politics.

As First Minister of Wales from 2009 until 2018, he led the Welsh Government through times of turmoil, tensions and success.

This book tells the story of Welsh politics during his premiership as well as throwing some light on behind-the-scenes drama.

He reveals the battles with Westminster over funding for Wales and describes his relationships with Cameron, May and Corbyn, as he shares his political journey from Foot and Mouth to Brexit.

Carwyn also gives his response to the very difficult circumstances surrounding Carl Sargeant’s departure from Cabinet.

Through these stories and many more, we also get a fascinating insight in to the way politics works. But don’t expect a political memoir. As the title suggests, this is a book that tells the story of Carwyn Jones the man, not just the First Minister.

He reveals the private man outside the political bubble: his childhood: being brought up as a Welsh speaker in Bridgend, his strong Welsh heritage going back centuries in one small corner of Wales, student days in Aberystwyth University and being called to the bar in London, all told with wit and humour. Carwyn talks frankly about his wife’s cancer diagnosis and the life-changing decisions they both faced during the period of diagnosis and treatment.

He shares the challenging, sometimes traumatic, but ultimately rewarding time that followed, leading to the couple adopting two children. As a fluent Welsh speaker, Carwyn shares his views on the status of Wales as a nation and the steps taken during his tenure as First Minister to protect and promote the Welsh language as well as giving us his thoughts on independence and his experiences of sharing Wales abroad. This is a book about a life lived in and out of the public eye, a life that’s not just politics.
