Domesday Book records that Wiga, a Saxon, held two estates, at Stewkley and Drayton Beauchamp.
By the 13th century Wygge was an established surname in several counties.
The Buckinghamshire line prospered and by the early 16th century Thomas Wigge V was a man of substance living at Mentmore, where his descendants continued as Squire for nearly two centuries until the spendthrift Thomas IX brought ruin to the family.
Thomas Wigg IX's eighth and youngest son, Richard, emigrated to Carolina and by 1711 he was a successful merchant.
